I bought the 50/100 grit stones and they're still in the wrapper, never used them. Recent › Forums › Main Forum › From KME to Wicked Edge. We've tested dozens of knife sharpeners and the Wicked Edge works better than any knife sharpening system we've seen. Swapping paddles is about a 10 second process. KME user here. No clicks and bumps. I tape the blade almost every time. I'm going to build these out into equivalent buildouts between the WEPS PP1 and the KME. That was the progression of my purchases. The KME comes in at $180 for the standard kit (140/300/600/1500 diamond stones), +$36 for two strop sets, +$38 for two bottles of CBN 4/1.5 micron. I stopped at 1000 grit. The dual-screw clamping system is intriguing and functional. KME can do everything the WE can, it's just less convenient. All Pro Packs include the standard 100/200 and 400/600 grit diamond stones. I have since as far as I can remember thought about picking up a Wicked Edge, but the KME always curves those thoughts. I say this with an example: I've sharpened by El Patron in the KME, and it seems like each time I'm a little too far in between the first and second lines, so then I readjust, but then I'm not far in enough... and on the X axis (left-to-right positioning) it doesn't always just end up in the right place. I finally chose the KME because for about $460 you get everything they have to offer: all diamond stones, all diamond lapping films, all Arkansas stones, a smaller clamp, and a leather strop with a 4 micron … The diamond paste seems mediocre, and honestly I strop with good ol' green compound and a /u/adequacy paddle and my knives are hair-whittling. I found this to be a moderate PITA, because you're wetting stones, then wiping, then wetting, then drying. The same is true if you can see individual dents along the edge. They allow you to precisely match the blade angle, protect the face of the blade, and polish it to a mirror finish. KME wants everyone who purchases a KME tool to be 100% satisfied with the tool, and to be fully confident that they spent their money wisely; and they build every tool with that in mind. My first knife came out decent. Dents mean that if you are looking for a pristine edge, you’ll need to remove a lot more steel. This causes me to have sometimes weird bevels. I like that the KME is less expensive but also like the WE because I don't have to flip the blade as I can hit both sides. Viewing 2 posts - 1 through 2 (of 2 total), Wicked Edge Precision Knife Sharpener | Topic: From KME to Wicked Edge, This topic has 1 reply, 2 voices, and was last updated. I have the Pro Pack 1 (PP1), with the additional 1200/1600 and 1.4/0.6 micron ceramic stones. YMMV. The Wicked Edge Pro Pack 1 is by far the most popular Pro Pack. I tend to rely heavily on my 400’s as my go-to stones, but this means greater wear rates and more frequent replacement. The scratches from a new set will be rough and irregular. Out the door, that's $425. How can you tell when they’re finally broken-in? It is a much better built system. The folks at Chef's Choice have been a mainstay in the knife sharpener … Unless you're fixing a damaged blade, you don't need the 50/80 paddles. To that last point, by running the stones dry, and by having the positioning always lined up the same, I've yet (after 20+ different knives) run into a single hairline scratch. Both are excellent but the WE will sharpen faster and easier and based on reviews have better stones. Easy enough to do, but, it looks a bit ghetto. Just a cheap kitchen knife. Not to mention years ago he let someone else sharpen it and they laid one side of the bevel out really far. I've also added the ball joint arms, and the 1.0/0.5 micron strops. Uneven scrubbing… It was easier for me to scrub than to do even strokes. To one of your points: I sharpened a standard S30V PM2 down to hair-shaving sharpness on the KME. The 100 grit diamond stones are beastly, and will chew through anything I've tried so far (M390, 20CV, 3V, S30V, etc.). Are resolving those issues worth $171 difference?" The paddles have internal magnets, so you can attach an angle cube directly onto the paddles to get a measurement. Some love it, but I didn’t like my results. If you choose a grit, but don’t seem to be able to raise a burr within twenty or thirty strokes, it’s a good indicator that you should go to a lower grit. KME is a relatively recent addition to the guided sharpener market, but it’s been gathering a lot of converts lately thanks to some innovations and attractive pricing (depending on your tastes.) Major hassle, because after the Arkansas, if you use the kangaroo strops, now you have to re-re-adjust again. I am on the fence as.to which I should purchase and I need your feedback to help me decide. The hard part for me is picking the right starting grit for a semi sharp blade. New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast. I wish it was a different context :). All Pro Packs also include a base. You guys and gals will decide which one I purchased. You can screw in the top screw when initially mounting, then screw the lower screw to really get a firm grip. Combining the two previous issues, I have managed to get hairline scratches on two different blades now (including the El Patron...). Buy once, cry once. Little more to be said, wasn't terrible as when I used the Sharpmaker/Lansky, but still notable. It has a system that lets you "measure" your blade on the z-axis (so a PM2 is a "B", a Grayman Dua is a "B", a Tenacious is a "B.5", etc.). Some people swear by the WEPS strops, they're not my thing. Basically the same as the stop collar mod for an EP. In other words, I should've just gotten the Pro Pack 2, but really, the Pro Pack 1 is more than enough, I just had some extra Christmas money to spend. For edges which are in good condition, but I can tell that they’re dull by the light reflected from the edge, I’ll go to 600 grit, or even 400. This is what I have pretty much thinking. A broken-in set will leave a scratch pattern which looks like a sheet of sandpaper was used. I was looking at the Pro Pack 1 as you mentioned because it comes with a base and the stones that come with it. Probably technical advances at the manufacturer. All the scratches will be uniform, appearing to be the same depth and width. How long does it take to reprofile say S30V on the KME? A wild wall of text appears!
